AMPERSAND – THOSE ROBOTS WANT MY SKATEBOARD

Well, I’m back in Japan and off to a good start. The main reason being, the video that myself, Marc Whitelaw as well as the other people at BYC Collective, is finally finished and online. This video took us a long time mostly because we decided to incorporate some CG effects into it to make it really stand out. Not many skate-videos go this route, but we figured it would help us stand out and really build our own niche with skateboard videos.

I met Marc through a friend I once worked with back when I was at West 49. This guy was a huge fan of Kilian Martin and Brett Novak’s work, and he was really interested in making a major skate-video to help build a name for himself in his industry. When we first met up two and a half years ago, we hit it off right away and have been good friends since then.

This project took us quite awhile to complete mostly because of our animated robot friend, Ollie, who we plan to use in other projects in the years to come. For now, we hope you enjoy our first project in what we expect to be a long and incredible adventure. Ladies and Gentlemen, I’d like to present you with: Ampersand.

It was a quick decision when Rob from The Boardr sent Andy Anderson an invite to compete in the first ever Boardr Am contest series that qualifies 1 person automatically into an upcoming X-Games Am comp. The question wasn’t whether or not Andy wanted to go and compete but more about which ones of the 6 stops would be best to go to. Well, stop 1 happened to be in LA, in January, that made the decision easy. We flew down on the 21^st giving us a couple days to hang out and see the town before the event. Day 1 we hit up Venice Beach, starting off with the Skate Park of course. What a great place, 3 bowls, some fun shaped clam shell quarters and a little bit of street obstacles. Andy and I (Hippie Mike) both shredded the snake bowl mostly, just having fun going fast and catching waves. After filming a couple quick Instagram videos I pulled out the real camera and caught a sick line of Andy in the deep bowl. He was wowing the audience both inside and outside of the park.

After a solid session we strolled down the strip a bit and saw the sights that reminded us of good old Hastings Street in East Van except with actual tourists around. It was a gorgeous day to hang out in Venice and then we headed off to some street spots and finished off the day with an evening LA Clippers game at Staples Centre. Blake Griffin demo!

The next morning we went over to Sheldon Skate Park where we thought the contest was to check in and warm up, but the contest location had been changed to Stoner Plaza because of them not getting the right permits for Sheldon. Oh well, we had to stay and shred this Sheldon Park, it was sick – Triple set, ledges, rails, quarter pipes everywhere, Andy put on a show at this park for sure. After getting heated up and filming a few lines we ventured off to Stoner. Stoner Plaza is a lot more streety and all the kids were bangin’ out the tech tricks. The most popular obstacles were definitely the bank to bank gap, the quarter pipe hip, the hubba and the rail. This location change definitely changed the style of the contest, but that didn’t change our attitudes. We were here to skate, and Andy was there to be seen. He definitely did some tricks that turned heads while we were there. After a solid warm up session and some quick filming we headed down the street to skate the ledges at Santa Monica Courtyard. The sun was going down so we didn’t stay long, but we made sure to get some footage. After that we jumped in the car and blasted off to Anaheim to check out the infamous Wouldshop Skateboards backyard pool and DIY park. Ben Butler was a great host letting us shred away until we felt like it was time to quit. Andy shredded hard in that pool and learned some fresh lines that had some danger factor in there for sure. What a sick time!!

Day 3, contest day, and it was hot. We headed back to Stoner and got right into it. The gate was still locked when we arrived so Andy started warming up in the little picnic area by putting on a Freestyle Demo for the other competitors. Once the gate opened up it was every man for himself and the park was flooded with talent of all ages. There ended up being about 115 competitors altogether that day so warm up time was pretty crazy with people skating fast in every direction. The contest got underway and Andy was in Jam 4 (out of 41 jams), 3 people, 3 minutes. He skated good and did lots of funky tricks that some people couldn’t comprehend and most people would never attempt. It wasn’t one of his best runs ever, but he made a mark with his creativity. Only 18 people were going to advance to the semi-finals so all he could do was hope he made it. The skill level was high at this comp and there were some dominators for sure, Dashawn Jordan, Sebo Walker, Micky Papa, Nate Greenwood, Paul Hart and Jon Cosentino were definitely the guys to watch out for in this one. Jon Cos represented hard all day with consistent style and perfect landings all over the park. He led the entire day, and stepped up his game in the finals to keep his lead and take the first all-expenses paid ticket to X-Games Am!! Way to go Jon, and way to represent Canada. Andy finished in 33^rd place which was really good considering the talent he was up against and the fact that Stoner Plaza was not fully his style park. We got some grub and headed back to the hotel to chill for the night. We had all day the next day to go hit the streets before our flight home.

Woke up, got breakfast and started hunting out spots on www.laskatespots.com – first stop was Hollywood High. No warm up and a sneaky move through the gate, Andy started the day with commitment and style dropping 4 solid tricks down the 12 stair rail in about 10 minutes. We headed out from there and found a couple of the popular high schools from all the videos but there wasn’t much luck getting through the gates. We moved over to Santa Monica and ended up back at Stoner Plaza where we got directions to University High School for a little 8 stair action. Andy stuck a couple tricks down the rail and then signed his name with his patented Half Flip (or Anti-Flip) down the set and we called it a day.

It was a great trip and we got to see a lot in 4 days, the contest was sick and it was sweet to see everyone rip it up. It’s too bad the location was changed but it was still a great event. Andy Anderson Leaves his Mark in Montreal

When Protest rider Andy Anderson got the email invite to AM Getting Paid, it was a must for him to go. These guys recognized his performance at Damn AM Costa Mesa and knew that he would come to put on a show for the crowd. When Andy’s parents asked me to go with him and give him some coaching how could I say no, so we headed over to the party town of Canada – Montreal…

It was gonna quick, fly over night on September 10^th/11^th and come back right after Finals on September 14^th, so I made a solid plan of how to fit in a lot of stuff in between the contest runs. I was pretty certain that Andy would make it through to round 2 no matter what so we knew where we would be on the Sunday. We showed up Thursday morning and hopped in a rental car from the airport only to be led around the city in the rainy rush hour traffic by that annoying GPS girl. Arriving at the hotel 5 hours early left us with plenty of time to find some street spots in China Town and we hit them up quick between showers. First we found some awesome breakfast served by a girl with hair almost as long as mine, then after Andy did a few freestyle demos outside the mall we found a sweet kinky flatbar on the corner of some intersection and Andy just rode over and 50-50’d the whole thing. Somehow he got out of there unscaved with a solid smith grind around the kink corner and 180 back out to the sidewalk.

Off we headed to that tall A-Frame ledge and Andy boardslid the whole thing while a Freight Truck almost took out some pedestrians right beside him. The rain came back sudden and fierce and we headed back to the hotel. They let us check in, we threw down our bags and busted out to Le Taz, the place where the event was held – AM Getting Paid.

When we rolled up there was only about 7 people skating inside and the park was brand spankin new, it was sick. Both of us started skating and eyes quickly turned on Andy. I could tell right away that he was going to do well in this comp. The park was awesome filled with ledges, rails, launchers and quarter pipes and everything wanted to grind. We skated there for quite a while before heading back to the hotel where we met up with Benny Stoddard from King Shit Magazine and hung out before dinner. The next day was Qualifiers and this old guy still hadn’t slept so it was early bedtime…

We rolled in early to the Taz for warm ups and Andy was on fire, he had already learned so many tricks and lines from the day before so I just started filming him right away before the crowd showed up.

The music was sweet with Barry Walsh (Spoon Bee) mixing it up with Vinyl Ritchie, it doesn’t get much better than that. When the competition began I had given Andy the best advice, “go out there and skate like yourself, hit all your basic bangers on the rails and ledges and throw in those funky tricks in the middle every chance you get. If you can steal the judges eyes, you win…” And that’s what he did, it was funny because afterwards I honestly had no idea who else was even in his heat, the MC’s were only talking about what Andy did. He stole the show on Day 1 and let everyone know his name finishing in 7^th place out of 76 dudes. Check it out

We both left super stoked, and so did everyone else that was from the BC Crew…The day was still light out so we headed out to Montreal’s most famous skate spot The Big-O. Now knowing this pipe is not easy to skate and having a super bummed knee I approached with caution. Andy on the other hand walked right up in front of Marc Tison and his friends to throw down an insane first warm up line. They were stoked on Andy for sure. He was fearlessly hitting up the gap in the wall with pivots, slashers and airs. Big-O crossed off the list of things to do, damn…

The next day was supposed to be Best Trick at P-45, the sick-ass DIY spot in the back yard of Le Taz, so we woke up early, grabbed Benny and headed out to skate this school with the 3 Boobs, this place was sick. Everyone threw down a line or 2 but Andy definitely owned it

It started to rain and we had to leave, unfortunately the Best Trick contest was postponed as well so we headed back to the hotel to figure out what to do. Benny took a nap while we went to get some much needed Poutine and Andy told me that he really wanted to skate something, bad… I texted Raj Mehra from Mehrathon Trading to ask where the magic secret indoor pools were hiding and he replied right away with an address. Off we headed to the Backyard Party Bowl owned by Eric Mercier and we couldn’t have been more stoked. I said to Andy after we left that I think I could skate that place for 2 hours and not even care to touch coping, the speed was insane. Both of us ripped it up with grinds and airs and I somehow convinced Andy to learn these Frontside Bigspin Melons off the extension into the 5foot.

We got some footage for the Authentic video, met some awesome dudes and had as much fun as we would’ve had in my own backyard. Thanks for the tip Raj!

The next day was go time and little man was feeling the pressure. We headed out for a big breakfast with Benny and Dave Birnie, picked up Riley Boland at the hotel and busted back to Le Taz for Semis. Everyone was on their game. I gave Andy the same advice and pointed out what others were doing wrong that would hurt them in their runs. He was on his game for sure but in the heat of the moment forget to throw in all those creative tricks that make him Andy. Still he did awesome putting down a close to flawless run which was more like a full 4 minute line. Andy is so fun to skate with and even better to sit and watch, you never know what he’s gonna try next but you can be certain he will most likely land it first try. Andy finished in 21^st place at this event which was sick. We were all super proud of him and almost every person at the event, competitors and spectators, made a point to come over and let him know how much fun he brought to AM Getting Paid. After the Finals, and the winners were announced we headed out back to Project-45 for the Best Trick contest. We literally had to catch our plane in 2 hours so we had to make it quick. In 30 minutes Andy skated away with a fresh $100 in his pocket and we hi-fived our way to the parking lot. The trip was quick, the people were great, the skating was awesome and the memories will last forever.

Ryan Brynelson goes Pro

I’ve known Ryan Brynelson for quite a few years and he has always been a pure 100% Freestyle Skateboarder. He learned most of what he knows from the Canadian Legend Kevin Harris and took those skills as a base to improve upon. We put Ryan on the Protest Skateboards Team in 2012 in respect that he was starting to enter word-wide competitions for freestyle and I respected his talent, his passion and his consistency on his board. Whether you respect Freestyle Skateboarding or not it is difficult to diss guys that can do handstands while rolling on 2 boards and then kickflip one out under their feet…

There are less than 300 people in the world that refer to themselves as Freestyle Skaters and Ryan is proud to be one of them. Last year at The World Round Up Freestyle Championships in Surrey, BC, Ryan won the Amateur Division and the year before he had gotten 2^nd place. So for year #3 of this event we felt it was time for Ryan to move up to the Professional Division and what better way to do it than to introduce his new Pro-Model Deck at the event. Ryan had to fly back to Canada from Japan for this event and he was stoked, but knowing the freestyle world well, he knew the guys he would have to go up against, the world’s best Freestylers who have been dropping the same routines for as long as he’s been alive. It was a great event and Ryan did really well, he came out strong the first day in Prelims, and moved up in position after the Semi-Finals being placed in 6^th, and after crazy runs from everyone on the Sunday, Ryan Brynelson finished in 10^th at the Finals – not bad for his first ever Pro Contest.

We were stoked on Ryan’s performance and the rest of the Freestyle World is super happy for his success in moving up to Professional. Protest Skateboards Welcomes Shawn Rowbottom

I met Shawn Rowbottom through the internet and just started following his ventures of nasty skate spots and crazy tricks he would do at them and I was always stoked on his commitment to skateboarding. As time went on we communicated a bit here and there and finally met face to face a couple months ago in Victoria. As we sat and chatted about life and skateboarding I began to realize more and more how we were very similar, the long hair, the crazy ambitions, and the will to go for it when there’s something we want. The offer was put on the table, and it’s time for Shawn to get some recognition.

This guy represents the Langford scene on Vancouver Island and he’s a dedicated Six Side Local which says a lot about someone’s skating right there. If you’re favourite place to skate is the toughest and gnarliest skate spot around, chances are you’re pretty good. I’m stoked to hook this guy up and see what changes happen in his life from here on out, but most of all I’m stoked to skate with him. For his welcome to the team video we decided to show off a compilation of old and new footage that shows Shawn’s crazy side, the last trick says it all.

Protest Skateboards Welcomes Merrick Orr

I said it just about a month ago, is Merrick Orr the next David Gonzales? And when I said it, what I meant was, Damn this kid is such a shredder with awesome aggression in his skateboarding and with the right push he could be a household name one day. Merrick resides in Sooke, BC on Vancouver Island and skates hard as much as he can. He skates fast, with no pivot cups in his trucks, and he stays on his board no matter what. At a mere 14 years old he has serious potential to get a ton of amazing footage and we are stoked to be the ones showcasing it. From the first moment I saw this kid I was in awe and knew that I would know him for a long time. After some back and forth conversation Merrick decided to join the team of Protest and follow us along on the positive journey of skateboarding and mentorship that we are about to embark on. He came over to the mainland a few days ago and we took a few hours to skate the brand new indoor Protest Ramp together and film this part. Like usual, Merrick showed up with a vengeance to shred, and did just that blowing away everyone that was there. We are proud to welcome him onto the Protest Skateboards Team and this video will show you why.

Is Merrick Orr the next David Gonzales?

I got my first impression of young Merrick Orr on July 1^st of 2013 at the annual Canada Day skateboard competition kickoff to Bowl Series at Seylynn Bowl. This was the 19^th year for Bowl Series and I’ve been at this event for about the past 12 years which is ironic since this kid was only 13 years old at that time. I had noticed him come into the park with his Mom and a true Seylynn legend Carlos Longo, and he even looked a lot like Carlos with scraggly hair and that rocker style. He had already caught my eye before he stepped on his board, but then he dropped in and started annihilating the place. Poppin’ crail grabs and kickflips over the hips and just cruising hard with full speed ahead mentality, everyone was checking out Merrick, and a lot of people were saying the line “Is this the next David Gonzales or what?” It was right around the time when David’s insane part had just dropped so he was fresh on the brain, but man did this kid skate like him, and look like him too…

Merrick was killing the park all day and was ready to join in the Advanced category which is super awesome for any 13 year old, especially at the oldest skate park around. His run began and he tried to ollie every hip on the way down the snake run making the common mistake of smashing his head going over the last hip into the deep end which is actually referred to as “Head Bang” because of how many people who have hit their head on it. He was dazed and confused but still wanted to skate and it took me, his Mom and Carlos to drag him over to his chair and sit him down. Merrick was hurt physically, but even more scarred mentally that he wouldn’t be able to compete that day. We told him it was for the best and kept him sitting down. Of course once the Advanced Finals started there he suddenly appeared back in full motion. I knew right then that this kid was determined to skateboard.

Merrick came out to all the comp that summer travelling over from Vancouver Island every time. He lives in Sooke and wanted to get down in the Vancouver scene. I think he did a great job impressing people because we all know him simply as Merrick and love to watch him skate. This kid is gonna be around a long time, and he actually may just be the next David Gonzales, or maybe he’s the next Carlos Longo just in a different era. Either way, he stokes me up big time.

Authentic Board Supply releases their Team Rider names!

So, you wanna know who rides for the only true Surrey Skate Team do ya?

Today is November 4^th, and first off I need to thank everyone who has been supportive of the new Surrey skate shop Authentic Board Supply so far. We had a ton of awesome customers come in the first 2 days we were open and they were all stoked on the shop, not just on how much sweet product there was but on the actual design itself. This means a lot to me since I am big on being unique and different, and I love custom stuff. We worked hard to make the shop look as cool as it does, and it happened fast.

Today we begin to release the “secret riders” names, bio’s and welcome videos to the world starting with myself – Hippie Mike. 28 years of skateboarding so far and I am far from being done. Check out my bio and this sweet video of me skating the type of obstacle I love most – rocks…

Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey #10 – Bear Creek Park

It breaks my heart to say it’s over but what a perfect day to finish it off.

We hit up Bear Creek Skate Park on Saturday for the Final Finale of Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey and it all went super smooth. It was a super long day of course but that’s okay, everyone had a great time and no one got hurt, so that’s really all that matters. I had a fun time MCing like usual and was stoked on how many kids and parents came out to support the event. It has been 10 years of building a family and it is a family that I will always cherish.

The day kicked off with a whole bunch of true Mini’s from age 3-10 years old. And it proved itself ridiculous right off the bat as little Emmanuel blasted over the bank gap in the first run. It’s like the size of an 8 stair. Django and Theo Caseley shredded every piece of tranny in the park while Emmanuel utilized the stairs, rail and mini quarterpipe. Kaelen, Austin and Presley showed off what being a true Mini is about along with Caden Smith and a couple others, but it was the 2 regulars stealing the show with Aiden Eastman and Parker Sherwin. They both got flip tricks and pretty much go for it the entire time they’re on their boards. This one was definitely decided by the finals. Django took it over Theo – awesome!

17 Beginners were next on the agenda, and they were all lookin’ like pros. The usual 5 superstars threw down and made it to finals – JR Barron, Adam Lewis, Mar Melyukov, Nick Bachmeier and Justin Fiorante, but all the other dudes were hot on their trails, especially Josh Lewis and Damon Morgan. All the beginners skated really good and landed a huge variety of tricks. The best was how many of them popped ollies over the big bank gap, twice as long as the other one and a bit higher with a super tough runway. Mark Melyukov was killing it early but had a tough run in his finals, Nick skated super consistent all day and ended in 4^th place, but the Top 3 were untouchable. All 3 had almost flawless runs in the finals and they all got tech. JR landed everything he tried from flip tricks to grinds down the rails and even ollied the bank to finish it, Justin skated solid and utilized pretty much every obstacle along with throwing in a couple flatground flip tricks, and Adam played it cool by doing each trick frontside and backside on the ledges and down the stairs. He popped over the big bank gap no problem and then came back to frontside 180 down the other one. Solid runs, and his first ever 1^st place victory. Way to go Adam!

The Intermediates were very interesting to watch, a true blend of talents. 2 freestylers joined in for this one – Austin Shelton and Dillanger Kane – and they both went full hardcore on it making it to finals. Both of these kids are super tech and creative which makes it fun to watch. Old time local Max Stephans came up from Seattle just to be a part of the final Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey and had some good runs. Max was always talented and it was great to see him there again. Jon Schrack and Doogie Lester also killed it the whole time, all the Intermediates were sick but the ones that stuck out the most were Kai Searle, Riley Allen, Weston Hutchinson & Dave Brown. Dave’s one of my fav’s to skate with at all the old bowls and he brought his emotions with him to this contest. It was the best that I had ever seen him skate and he went full speed at every obstacle with sick old school style. I was stoked that he made finals. Riley was all over the park too with some creative manoeuvres but couldn’t beat Dave in the finals. It really came down to Weston and Kai. Both of these kids are so consistent it isn’t funny and they do hard tricks, flip tricks and ledge tricks all over the place. Weston has the big gaps better but Kai was so solid in his final run that he took the gold. Tight contest boys!

The ladies had their usual jam time and all 4 of them did their thing. Nana Kunugi stuck the only kickflip for the ladies, while Tienna showed he confidence on all the obstacles. Steph rode around best she could and Carrie finally skated hard again like the old times busting shovits and 180’s on the banks and even popping ollies down both sets. Good job ladies and thanks for coming out.

Then came Advanced…

13 dudes ready to rip it and then somehow I got called out by my good buddy Shadd Trepp to compete as well. So here it was as Hippie Mike competed in the final Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey, I only did 1 run and threw down a bunch of noseblunt tricks on the quarters for the crowd but it was a good little demo that they all deserved after so many years of just seeing me behind the mic. If there’s one place I don’t mind showing off at it’s Bear Creek Park. The real competitors though were all insane and they all wanted to take home a Top 3 plaque at the last stop of the tour. Ryan Barron stepped up his game and landed his tricks again, he even made finals. Calvin Dignard played it safe by sticking to the basics and landing every trick he tried. Jacob Drescher showed off his ledge and rail skills, along with a couple flip tricks. Fighter skated like he always does, but missed a couple moves in there. Mathew McCauley did his best against the big guys and stuck some smooth moves too. Yuya Ishikawa hit up the ledges and flatbar, while Justin James hit the transitions. Allen Handley and Jay Mykyte both did some serious tricks with sick style as well, and Brendan Nielsen spent the whole day trying to fs360 boardslide the shotgun rail. Cisco Gooding skated consistent like always with long flowing runs filled with switch grinds, blunts and flip tricks. Eve Feaver showed up to his first Surrey comp in years and skated BCP the way it was built, huge airs over the nipple and hips, and even a couple handplants on the big pyramid, but no one could catch Weston Ganger. 50-50 180 down the rail, flip tricks, grinds and gaps all over. Then he finished it off with a super long boardslide on the handybar. The competition was tight but Weston came out on top.

At the end of the day I finally announced all the winners from each category and we got photos of all the Top 3 with their plaques. I gave out plaques for Most Improved Skaters to JR Barron and Aiden Eastman who just destroyed it at every contest this year, and announced the last ever King of Surrey. The trophy went to Weston Ganger who definitely skated hard, solid and consistent all summer and took home a bunch of prizes at each event. He won this one too which made it it all make even more sense.

As people were cleaning up there was a Best Trick contest on the 4 stair setup for a signed Rick Howard Girl Deck that he left for me at Supra Distribution. Ryan Barron came through huge with a kickflip up the set and took that baby home.

We raised a fair amount for the Surrey Food Bank once again with

$451.00 and about 350 lbs of food and Marilyn Herrmann showed up as Executive Director to make a speech of how appreciated our donations always are. Another solid year for Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey.

A great series, 10 years of amazement, and no better way to finish it off then a solid contest at my favourite Surrey Skate Park – Bear Creek.

Our Youngest King

The day has come when we have a new King of the Bowls and this one was definitely a first.

It was another crazy weather day and everyone that was driving betweenSquamish and Whistler was sure that the competition would be cancelled since it was raining mist in the valley, but low and behold Whistler Bowl was dry, and luckily stayed that way right until the end of the contest. Things got rolling at a normal time but with Crank Works happening around the corner a lot of people missed the Beginner Category because they were trying to find parking. It was war out there in the parking lots and also in the bowl. The little dudes shredded the best they could mainly sticking to the bathtub at the top of the bowl. The crowd was behind them as usual and everyone had fun which is all that matters. The Intermediates stepped it up by busting tricks on that barricade in the bathtub and some of them tried to utilize the entire bowl as best they could. Little Rylee Wong showed his carving skills by hitting every tough line he could throughout the bowl carving both backside and frontside super smooth and he was the only kid that could make it all the way back up to the top from the bottom without pushing. He finished in 2^nd place just beating out Jake from the island who had a lot of awesome tech trick all over the bowl, especially on the barrier. But neither could keep up with old purple pants Riley Allen who knows how to fly. Airwalks, Salflips and Bonelesses everywhere, Riley showed he knows how to work the old bowls. 1^st Place representing Surrey, way to go buddy!

The ladies division was dominated by Carrie Williams & Krystal Clear. Carrie laid down a tons of tricks in the top section of the bowl as well as the deepend, but Krystal showed how to hit the gravitron frontside and took the win.

When we got to Advanced it was announced that there were a lot of “Heavy-Hitters” in this one and that was no lie. Tons of Local boys that you only see at their park were in the house, but it was the dudes that travelled there that would take the medals. A new kid to Bowl Series Merrick Orr out of Sooke on the island has been wowing people all summer in the contests and kept it going hard at Whistler. This long haired slayer shows his fearless side all day long as he pops ollies over every hip going down the bowl and throws down a ton of tricks everywhere he rides. At 13 years old he is making a name for himself, and took home 3^rd place at this finale. Good job Buddy! When it came to the Top 2 it was 2 that have been running this series all summer. Both these guys were looking like they would be King this year for sure except for 2 conditions – 1. They both missed one event this year and 2. They have both been King already and you can’t win it twice. But Andy Anderson and Eve Feaver reminded the crowd why they were royalty at this one. Eve is killing it this year at 41 years of age and he works hard to keep up to these young bucks, he dominates the deepends of the bowls and carves lines that others fear, while Andy shows how he is only getting better with age at 17 and lands every single trick he tries whether it over a hip, on the barricades, out of the bowl or something freestyle incorporated into the bowl. The best tricks Andy tossed at this one that no one had ever seen before was a pop to pogo on the 3^rd corner wall and pop back in, and then he finished the run off by casper stalling the deep end – that was insane… I’m very proud to have both of these shredders on the Protest Skateboards Team and they repped hard all summer placing in every bowl series ad sharing the wins. Andy Anderson took 1^st place at this one.

When it came to announcing this year’s King of the Bowls not too many people had a clue who it would be since most of the rippers had already won it before and others didn’t make it to every comp this year so they didn’t qualify. Strato got on the mic and made a humble speech about the fact that this year’s King would be from the Intermediate category and would also be the youngest Kingso far at 9 years old.

Bowl shredder Rylee Wong is the 19^th King of the Bowls!!

Rylee got woken up from a nap the car to come and claim his trophy and join the historic list that many dream of being named on. He had no idea this would happen and was super stoked. Next year he will be forced to compete in Advanced and defend his title. Give it up for him, and be stoked on another successful year of the King of the Bowl Series.
