Hippie Mike sponsored by Surrey Shirts

Another company adds Hippie Mike to their list of people they sponsor to represent and promote their brand, and this one is another one of those companies that is local and chose to make Mike the 1st person on their team. Mike as we all know is a positive image in the skateboard community and in the City of Surrey, working with Parks and Rec for over a decade, creating tons of awesome events and bonding the skate community to the Surrey Food Bank and other organizations. He has helped to bring many people together in many different ways and is always willing to go the extra mile to assist others in positive growth. Surrey Shirts is a local growing company and with Mike’s love and pride for living in Surrey, he was a perfect fit to represent their product. Some designs are fun and others are out to prove a point but they all relate back to one thing – Surrey

Hippie Mike is sponsored by Surrey Shirts1

As of December 1st, Mike’s skate shop Authentic Board Supply will be the exclusive dealer in Surrey carrying the Surrey Shirts brand.

Authentic Board Supply gets props in The Surrey Now

hippie-mike-in-now-authentic

When the people at The Surrey Now caught wind that Hippie Mike was going to be opening up a skateboard shop in Surrey they had to do an article about it right away. The Surrey Now is always promoting things I do in the community, there’s usually at least one article about myself every year, and then there tends to be a few photos of people at my events that will get mixed into the media shuffle here and there. This time it was about the fact that I am opening up a skateboard shop right in the heart of Whalley simply named Authentic Board Supply. The shop is all about keepin’ it real in the skateboard world by giving kids a place to hang and have positive mentors, bringing more events and partnerships to the communities that surround us, and providing the best product out there at reasonable prices. I’ve been working very hard to get this shop ready to open and have had an amazing crew helping me with the renovations. We should be open this weekend in the Dell Shopping Centre located 10604 King George Blvd – come check us out…

Hippie Mike is Headin’ South

Hippie Mike's Tour de Surrey #10

That’s right, it’s stop #3 of Hippie Mike’s 10th Annual Tour de Surrey Series and it’s going down at South Surrey/White Rock Park this Saturday at 12 noon. So far the first 2 stops have been awesome with tons of kids pushing their abilities to the limits and trying their hardest to be the best, and lots of tough to beat dudes in Advanced showing up and laying it down. Cloverdale was hot, Fraser Heights was blazing and South Surrey is gonna be just as tight. It’s a great skate park with tons of transitions, a barrier, a spine, an old style bowl, and some unique street obstacles. The competition is gonna be tough like always, but no Andy Anderson this year so someone else is gonna have to win in Advanced. Who’s it gonna be? Can someone else beat The Dominator? Come find out.

$5 or 2 non-perishable food items to enter – registration starts around 11:30am

Check out this video from the Fraser Heights Contest which was filmed by Leah Bolton at JoyTV10 and is being featured on Channel 10 in between episodes until after the grand finale in September

And don’t forget that we have collaborated with Moonrider Productions and are making a full length documentary of this year’s Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey #10. Only one way to get in there, and that’s by showing up…

See you there

Vulcan Bolts welcomes Hippie Mike

Hippie Mike - 1 footer off shed

Vulcan Bolts is a new hardware company created by Dennis Regan who also runs www.RollingBonesPodCast.com Dennis decided to start this new bolt company and chose Protest Skateboards owner Hippie Mike to be the first Team Rider. Maybe he figured a 200lb hippie would be a good way to test the strength of the bolts…

Here’s what Dennis had to say about it –

“In the winter of 2013, there came the idea, ‘Start a bolt company!’.

I was sitting in Las Vegas and the idea came to me over dinner. After much liquor, a hangover, and losing a bunch of money, it was a go.

The premise behind the company is to provide the best bolts, bearings, and clothes that we can make.

It officially started in July with the launch of Vulcan Bolts. Forged Hardware available in both allen and philips.

I wanted to have a team of dedicated skaters. Not dedicated to their skateboarding, but dedicated TO skateboarding. That is why the first person I wanted on the team is Hippie Mike.

Mike has been promoting skateboarding in Surrey, BC for 10 years with his own creation, Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey. This is a series of contests based in skateparks in the city of Surrey, BC. Every kid is invited to skate and walks away with something. You enter, you win a prize. His goal is to share the joy that he has experienced through skateboarding over the years with every skater. He started his own skateboard company ( Protest Skateboards ) to sponsor young kids that had talent and passion for skating. He does everything possible to encourage his riders to push themselves and supports them in every way.

His own skateboarding comes from the soul. He does the tricks that he loves. In 10 years from now he will still be pulling body varial nose blunts because it makes him smile. Not because it was on the cover of a magazine.

Vulcan Bolts is proud to have the Hippie Mike ride Vulcan Bolts.”

Extreme Sports Skateboarding World Round Up

World Round Up – 2nd Annual

Last year was the first time for this event efficiently named The World Round-Up. Hosted in Surrey at the Cloverdale Rodeo, it’s a Freestyle Skateboarding Championship event and the top Freestylers of the world are invited (Pros and Ams). The event is all put together by 2 long time promoters of skateboarding – Kevin Harris and Monty Little, and last year some serious faces of skateboard history showed their presence: Russ Howell (one of North America’s first skateboarders) MC’d the event with some assistance from A.J. Kohn and “Dr. Skateboard” Bill Robertson and I believe they are all coming back again. Jim Goodrich was shooting photos, and George Powell even made an appearance on the Saturday. And the biggest name in Freestyle right now Kilian Martin should be showing up again to help out, hang out and put on some unbelievable demos.

It was a killer event last year with some bigtime competition, and the tricks were mind blowing. Shaun Gladwell took 1st place in Amateur with Protest Team Riders Ryan Brynelson and Andy Anderson taking 2nd and 5th places respectively. The Pro category was insane and super tough to judge. Everyone was stomping tricks that no one else would know how to do, and flowing with untouchable style and passion. Darryl Grogan took 1st place with Gunter Mokulys and Rene Shigueto right on his tail, but everybody did amazing. About 20-30 people competed last year in total but after speaking with Kevin Harris earlier today, we can expect a whole lot more to show up this time. All the names mentioned are definitely coming back to defend their titles, but some more to watch out for are Mic Murayama, Takashi Suzuki, Stephan Albert, Stefan “Lillis” Akesson, Mike Osterman and Per Canguru just to name a few. And maybe we’ll be lucky enough to see Kai Dunkel this time.

If you don’t know much about Freestyle Skateboarding, this would be a great time to learn. It is a huge part of skateboarding’s history and there is only a small core group throughout the entire world that still dedicate their lives to it. These are definitely some of the best skateboarders of all time, young and old, and everyone of them skates completely different from the next.

Last year we showed up just for the Finals and weren’t really prepared for how much filming we ended up doing – but this year www.protestskateboards.com will be covering the entire event in full HD so be ready for some serious coverage….

Check out the video compilation of last year’s Finals and try to show up to the event this year

Andy Anderson Extreme Sports Skateboarding Team Riders

Andy in Atlanta

Andy Anderson - Faceshot Leeside

Andy Anderson is our superstar Protest Team Rider at age 16 and is going for attempt #2 this weekend to qualify at Damn Am – this time in Atlanta. Andy hit up the contest last month in California and represented beautifully, laying down flawless and creative runs and making friends with some of the best Am’s out there, like Curren Caples and Louie Lopez who ended up in 1st and 2nd place. He got interviewed by Nigel Alexander and all in all had an amazing experience. Unfortunately Andy didn’t make Finals, but that’s okay. We all know how stiff the competition was in Costa Mesa.

I think this contest might be a little different since half the skateboard population doesn’t flock to Atlanta for the winter so maybe there won’t be such a reign of shredders to try to beat. But in today’s world, no matter where you go you know the skaters are gonna be sick. We wish Andy the best of luck and hope he makes it  through, but either way we know he will be the crowd pleaser as he is everywhere he goes. And the best part is, it’s actually Andy Anderson’s 17th birthday on Saturday April 13th, when he will most likely be skating his runs.

So make some noise for the little Local Boy that rips tranny, street and any obstacle you put in front of him – and all on his custom shaped Old School style deck built specially for him by Folk Skateboards.

Protest Represent!!

Andy - FS Wallride Pillar

Every day this week we will be posting up fresh photos of Andy skating lately on the site’s Facebook, so if you haven’t joined the site yet, it’s time to push that LIKE button.

Surrey/Delta demoed at The Spring Kickoff

IMG_1009

It was one of the first big contests of the 2013 season, and Dan Pageau couldn’t have chosen a better date. The Spring Kickoff Contest at Pitt Meadows lived up to it’s name by being on a beautiful Spring Day, and the day the clocks move ahead. Tons of kids showed up, lots of Locals for Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, and lots of the One Love Skate Shop Crew. Lanny Deboer and Andre Tsougrianis both hung out and skated a bit, Lanny won the highest air contest out of the bowl, and then MC’d a bunch of the contest. But we had a full sized crew show up from Surrey and Delta, including Jordan Strong, Brendan Nielsen, Ryan Barron, Jacob Drescher, Mathew McCauley, and JR Barron, along with Hippie Mike, Carrie Williams and Jaden Easton-Ellett with the Protest Skateboards Tent.

It was a solid competition, everyone was throwing down. In the beginner category there were lots of little rippers all doing different tricks left right and centre. JR Barron shredded it in the qualifier run and then smashed his face on his first trick in the finals chipping a tooth. But he just bounced up and fought through the pain to finish an unstoppable run, winning the Beginner competition. That’s how we train these kids in Surrey.

Jacob Drescher showed everyone how Delta does it as Chis Sommerville from Street Dreamz Board Shop sat and watched him beat out all the Intermediates with ease.

Ryan Lepore kept Delta’s reputation of amazing ledge and rail skating in full effect as he terrorized the entire course in both runs. The way it worked was you got to skate until you fell off your board twice. It took over 3 minutes for Ryan to slip up twice in the finals, beating out some tough skaters like Jordan Repin, Jesse Holland, Dominic Devries and Ryan Prasad.

Tsawwassen Represent!

They decided to have a Master’s/Senior’s division for people 30 years and over, so Hippie Mike got in there with Carrie Williams, Jonathan Reichert, Tim R and Dan Pageau. After complaining all day about his injured back and how hard it was to move, Hippie Mike went to town when it was his turn, utilizing the entire park and lasted a long time before falling twice. Of course his second fall was a crash hard enough to rock a nation.

Hippie Mike takin’ it home for Surrey!

It was a great event and I think everyone had a blast. We sold some gear, hung out with lots of dudes we haven’t seen in a while, and skated.

Here are some photos from throughout the day, mostly of the younger kids since they ripped it so hard.

Thanks to Dan Pageau and One Love Skateboard Shop for hosting the event. Support your local businesses
