Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey 2012 – Stop #4 Cloverdale

Finally a super sunny day in Cloverdale for a Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey. 3 years in a row it rained and then last year it was just cloudy and cold. But not this time, sunny, clear and hot…

The Mini started off the day with aggressive moves, Jon Schrack was flying into the bowl, Mark Melyukov was stomping flip tricks and even little Aiden threw himself off the big drop which is taller than he is. Those Mini’s are crazy, and if you haven’t seen them in action, make sure you come out to the next comp on September 15th.

The Beginners are even more nuts. Morgan Skinner and Kai Searle led the crowd with outstanding runs. Kai had a completely flawless run and was not trying easy tricks, and Morgan was busting huge gap tricks including fakie Ollie off the halfpipe drop and a big half cab into the bowl. 1 point separated their total scores, wow!! They demolished the rest of the competition but it was super close for 3rd place between Justin Fiorante and Zacc Laster, but Zacc managed to hold on for the prizes. That’s two 4th places in a row Justin, step it up buddy…

The Girls category was just Carrie Williams and Cali Martin but they both did their best and landed everything they tried, so it was all good.

The Intermediates got busy on the ledges and rails but were all dominated by ex-longhair William LeTourneau. This kid has been skating this Cloverdale Skate Park religiously since he started skateboarding and it shows. He’s got all the tranny lines in the nasty bowl and grew up to lock down a whole bunch of ledge and rail tricks. Won by a mile. Little Luke Thodus could be in the Mini category since he’s 10 years old, but entered the Intermediate where he belonged. This kid’s pushing 4’ tall and is completely fearless, and super skilled. 50-50’s down the kinked rail, lipslide on the rail down the stairs and whatever else he felt like going for. The best part of Intermediate was seeing Francois LeBlanc with his pants and socks hiked up as far as he could get them for his second run, just cruising around doing pointless old school for a laugh, but landing everything. Francois is heading back to the East Coast this week so that was the last contest we’ll see him in for a while…

Shawn Jafarnejad from Ollie North Skate Shop had a Best Trick Contest on the 3 stair rail before Advanced and gave away a Deck, a Shirt and a Pair of Shoes. Quick and serious.

The Advanced was stacked with rippers, a lot of them who had plenty of experience at the old Cloverdale Park, Mitch Salter, Jay Mykyte, Jordan Strong, Brendan Nielsen, Keegan Anderson, Andre Bissonnette…. But they were all trying their hardest not to lose to The Dominator, Dominic Devries. Nice try boys, maybe next time. Brendan came the closest. We finished off the contest with a chance to see if anyone could Ollie the old gap into the shallow end of the bowl and land on the hotdog. Jordan Strong, Allen Handley and Mitch Salter went for it and nasty as it was, Allen won it as the only one to ride away. Good job dude.

Well, this was most likely the last ever Hippie Mike’s Tour de Surrey Contest at the Old Cloverdale Skate Park since New Line Skate Parks is already trying to lock down the designs for the new one. The old park will be removed and the new one will be built around the corner beside the Cloverdale Recreation Centre – 6188 176st and should be done Spring 2013. I’ll be left with a ton of awesome memories of lots of kids that I raised as skateboarders in that park through skateboard lessons, camps, and tons of competitions.

RIP old Clovy, and Good Riddance

Sheldon Barr – “Beef Under The Chief” Video

A fresh video for “Beef Under the Chief”, the Squamish stop on the Bowl Series is now up on Push.ca

Have a look and see Adam Hopkins, Eve Feaver, Andy Anderson, Steve Denham, Bushman and more slay the bowl. I guess I should have tried to skate better that day, I could’ve been in it…

Nice video Sheldon

Kitsch at Chuck Bailey

Another successful demo at Chuck Bailey Skate Park. Geoff Dermer, Stacy Gabriel, Will Blakley and Mike Hastie along with a couple other special guests represented at Chuck last night, August 23rd, 2012. We threw in some Coastal Riders dudes for the Demo, like Dustin Locke, Jordan Zazula, John Hanlon and Paul Machnau, and then of course I was on the mic. We had a sweet BBQ with free hot dogs to start the night off right. The Demo was good and there were lots of kids that showed up for the show, and then Dermer threw out some product and had a Best Trick Contest on the 3block. Stephan Burke took home a fresh Kitsch Deck for a solid backside 360.

After all that we got to watch the infamous Bric-a-Brac Video on the Urban Screen (the outside wall of the rec centre). This was the first movie ever played on the Urban Screen and due to the success of the event, the people from The Surrey Arts Centre were stoked and want to do it more often.

Kitsch Demo Chuck Bailey

Thanks to Geoff, the Kitsch guys, Coastal dudes, DJ Cuzo, the Arts Centre, and the 150 people that came out throughout the night…

The End of the 18th Year – Bowl Series

Another amazing season of Old Bowl Skateboarding comes to a close with historic style. Every year, I itch for Canada Day just for the Seylynn Bowl Contest. To me it’s not at all about going out and competing to win, but just the chance to go skate with a huge crew of people that are all related in one way – Bowl Series. Seylynn, Griffin, White Rock, Squamish and Whistler, 5 great places to hang out and skate. These 4 “copingless” parks were all constructed in the 70’s and 80’s and are still the best parks for anyone who likes to go fast. If there’s one thing that skate parks are missing now a days, it’s Gravitron Speed Lines. If you don’t know what a Gravitron is, then I find it difficult to refer to you as a skateboarder. All the old bowls were created in a snake format and built on a downhill slope from top to bottom, but skateboarders being crazy figured out that if they fast enough down the outside of the bowl and shoot into the deepend in a u-turn could actually make it back up to the top through the bowl – Gravitron. The weightless feeling of transferring from vertical to horizontal as you tear into the bowl at dangerous speeds – Gravitron. A whole different world…

Skateboarding has changed so much over the last 3 decades, the kids now a days are just obsessed with tricks on obstacles, and a lot of them don’t know how to actually skate. They don’t know how to run onto their boards as fast as they can and push as hard as possible down the street into a downhill. They don’t know how to forget about tricks and just cruz. And that’s why I love the Bowl Series, because people of all ages that just love to skate are the ones that come out. I was astonished at Squamish by the amount of super young kids in the Beginner Category all skating tranny. There must have been over a dozen little dudes ranging in age from 4 years old to 13. They were all having the time of their lives just skating. And even in the Advanced Sections you have super young guys like Andy Anderson and Giet Rolan in their mid-teens coming out and competing against bowl legends in their 30’s and 40’s like Stevie D, Eve Feaver, Don Bushman, and myself, and beating us. It’s amazing.

Year # 18 was a very special year. Adam Hopkins is on what some would call a Glory Path this year winning pretty much any and every contest he enters, and he enters a lot of contests. He took Seylynn no problem, won it in White Rock on his first time ever there, wowed the crowd at Griffin for the gold, annihilated the competition at Squamish, and finished it all off with style, and huge airs, at Whistler. Adam Hopkins won all 5 stops, and is actually only the second King of the Bowls to win all 5, tying with Alex Chalmers who actually did it 2 years in a row back in 1997, ’98. But back then the 5th park was New West, not Squamish. Maybe Hopkins can follow in Alex’s footsteps and go for the undefeated repeat next year. Either way, you can tell that Adam is on his way to stardom and he has a huge posse of friends backing him up. Way to go dude!

Squamish was tight, Don Bushman was definitely present and showing off that this was his home park. Bushman is the only person that will always barge me out of the bowl, he’s big, goes super fast and charges lines that are impossible to read. He had these mega airs in the corner pocket of the vert wall over the loveseat that were just plain crazy and would stomp every one. Steve Denham showed off the fact that he also lives in Squamish now with smooth transfers all over the bowl and sick disasters on the vert wall. Eve Feaver was killin’ the loveseat and even Giver was skating good again. But no one was stopping Adam Hopkins with his inverts, judo airs and even a stomped 540 McTwist in the vert. He even melon transferred over the island in his run. A windy, but awesome day in Squamish, it even got topped off by Fighter doing the gap out to the parking lot. Protest represent buddy!

After the rowdy night everyone staggered into the old Whistler Park for the Finals. Same Beginners showed up from Squamish, but surprisingly had a tougher time skating a bowl without coping. I was on the mic giving them a hard time and they all represented. The Ladies were seriously picking out the speed lines and showing their fearless styles by going fast. There was a Best Trick out of the Slayer Hit for a Protest Cruiser Deck and dudes were going huge. Andy Anderson hit some sick tricks Sal Flips, Mute to Melon Hand Varial, and Bigspin Melon, Adam Hopkins was doing methods about 8 feet high and 10 feet long into the steep landing, but Danny Hagge took the win for going bigger. I’m not sure how fair that is though since Danny is about a foot and half taller than everyone else. Still sick though.

The Advanced was insane of course. My favs to watch were Eve Feaver, Turbo, Benny Stoddard, Stevie D and Hopkins. There were a lot of competitors in this category as always and it was tough to only choose a few for the Finals. I got hurt early in the day, throwing out my lower back and ended up MCing the entire event which was an honour for me. I was super hyped for the Finals and wouldn’t let them end. I think we played 4 long songs for them to skate to and everyone looked ready to pass out by the end. From Andy Anderson at age 16 to Eve Feaver shredding at 40 it was tight. Benny had the speed lines and tech tricks, Stevie and Danny had the huge transfers both ways in the bowl and sick barrier tricks, Andy demoed on the barricade and Eve skated like he skates at every event – fast, furious and styley. But obviously no one was catching Adam Hopkins, tossing 360’s, kickflip grabs and anything else he felt like puttin’ down. Huge props go out to Mike Strato for organizing and running all the events this year with the help of Giver. I know how much work behind the scenes goes into setting up a Series like this and it is definitely appreciated. 18 years of love.

Now bow down to your new King, Adam Hopkins…

Coastal Riders Represents in Surrey – Like Always

[youtube id=”HqwjGHnrziU” width=”620″ height=”360″]

For over a decade, local Surrey/Langley Skate Shop Coastal Riders has been keeping Surrey skateboarding, and always pays back the public with a stellar Team – Adam Fontaine, John Hanlon, Magnus Hansen, Dustin Locke, Jordan Zazula, Paul Machnau, Andrew Classon, Travis McGee, Mike Schulze, Dave King, Stu Benoit, Sam Hampton, Derek Mayer, Kyutae Kim, Scotty Tyson, Tyler Holm, Tommy Gudmunson and Majed Salem. It seems as though they showed up strong at Fraser Heights Skate Park on Saturday for the Cons Carnage in the Valley Contest shredding all obstacles in perfect fashion and taking home 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to be there to cheer them on, but I’m definitely proud of them…

Kitsch Demo Reminder

[vimeo id=”47962887″ width=”620″ height=”360″]

Just a quick shout out to Geoff Dermer and the boys – don’t forget to show up at Chuck Bailey Skate Park tonight for the Freaks and Geeks Demo to pay your respects.

I’ll be there hosting the event, we’ll be having a BBQ around 6pm followed by a Demo from the Kitsch Team, a Best Trick Contest and a showing of the Bric-a-Brac Video on the Urban Screen (The outside wall of the building).

The Kitsch guys cover all grounds and rip shit up, with style. They’re a local skateboard company out of Vancouver consisting of Mike Hastie, Cory Wilson, Stacy Gabriel, Will Blakley, Sean Macalister and the man Geoff Dermer. Dermer was actually the first skater I met when we moved out to British Columbia from Ontario back in 1998. We hooked up with a friend of a friend who’s roommate was dating Geoff and we all hung out. I never thought at that moment that I would be hosting a Demo for his skateboard company at a skate park I get paid to organize and run events at with a skate shop that I’m sponsored by (Coastal Riders) 14 years later. Now that’s a tight knit family…

Check the video from last week’s stop at Walnut Grove

See ya tonight

Bowl Series 18 – Finale Reminder

Every year I start planning our trip to Whistler for the Final Stop of the Bowl Series earlier and earlier. I love this trip every year. As soon as I have confirmation of the dates, we’re figuring out where we’re gonna stay and for how long, or even if we’re gonna stay up there. This will be the first year I actually get to show up on the Saturday for the Squamish “Beef under the Chief” contest and I’m stoked.

Squamish – August 18th

Whistler – August 19th

Get your shit together and plan to come out. Even if it’s just for one of the days. You can’t pick too many spots better than these 2 to go hang out with a bunch of Old Schoolers, have a few cold drinks , and watch some stellar skateboarding.

And you get to find out who will be crowned “King of the Bowls” for 2012. I know who it is…

See ya there
